NEW STRATEGIES

Doctors often treat symptoms of autoimmune diseases with anti-inflammatories or immunosuppressants, which DiPaolo describes as a blanket way to modify disease.

"From a basic research point of view, if we can understand the whys and hows, we can come up with new strategies to turn the immune system off or stop it as it relates to attacking the body," he said. The tricky part though, he said, is that turning it off altogether leaves the body vulnerable to viruses and bacteria."

Regulatory T cells are the immune system's way of controlling inflammation and preventing the development of various autoimmune diseases. Studies have shown that they can prevent rheumatoid arthritis if given before the disease process begins.

T cells that are part of the arthritic immune system are isolated, their genetic programming is switched so they suppress immunity only against the disease in the affected part of the body. Then, when they're reintroduced to the body, they suppress the immune system only in that spot, leaving the rest of the body's immune system to respond normally.

"It's a highly targeted immunosuppression rather than a global immunosuppression," he said. Now he's trying to figure out how to get the T cells to do the same thing after rheumatoid arthritis has started.

The potential for regulatory T cells is so great, DiPaolo said, that they're being tested in a lot of autoimmune diseases. But, inflammation in one organ is different than it is in another. So while regulatory T cells might be effective in stopping the joints from swelling in arthritis patients, that might not be the case for diabetic patients who have inflammation in the pancreas.

"Each specific (autoimmune) disease is caused by a completely different reason," he said.

ST.
FRIDAY, Feb. 26 (HealthDay News) -- An increase in certain types of immune system antibodies may contribute to the development of heart disease in people with active lupus, a new study finds.

In this study, Australian and British researchers found that patients with active lupus had significantly increased levels of autoantibodies to fat-binding proteins than those with less active disease. The increase in these proteins -- anti-apolipoprotein (anti-Apo A-I), anti-high-density lipoprotein (anti-HDL) and anti-C-reactive protein (anti-CRP) -- may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study appears in the March issue of the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.
businessweek.com

also,

Individuals who suffer from Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease, may want to adopt an alkaline diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, as a new study suggests that they may be at a higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

better health research ... funky source, but still true.
